Construction on the 105 story complex began in 1987 and halted in 1992 when the collapse of communism in Europe threw North Korea into financial difficulties. The colossal white elephant dominates Pyongyang’s skyline. Construction has resumed since early 2008 with funding from the Egyptian firm, Oruscom Group.

Russian foreign ministry says the clashes are unacceptable and called on both sides to show restraint to prevent the outbreak of military conflict. North Korea is threatening to continue launching strikes against the South if it violates their disputed sea border. The North also claims that its neighbour was the first to fire artillery shells. However, Seoul insists it acted in retaliation after rockets hit Yeonpyeong Island. It was initially reported that North Korea fired over 200 rounds across its western maritime border, destroying dozens of houses. The South says the attack killed two marines and injured at least 17 people.
